The 1930s was a decade of great hardship, beginning with the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl and ending with the start of World War II. These hardships caused a fundamental change in society at the time and lead to people having to live a much more frugal and simple life than what had been acceptable in the excessive previous decade. Shantytowns developed across the country as poverty became widespread. This was also the decade where bank robbers were glorified as Robin Hood types of figures. While President Hoover did very little to avert the financial crisis at the time, the next president, Franklin Roosevelt, ushered in new and radical economic and social policies to help alleviate the economic woes and worries of the decade.
